At Why Must I, our mission is to offer mental health programs and activities to young adults in both advantaged and underserved communities. Our goal is to enhance their capacity to navigate challenges effectively and flourish within their respective communities.
Our objectives encompass lowering the rate of suicide among young adults, fostering a secure and inclusive environment, raising awareness about our community initiatives and services, and enhancing the confidence and self-esteem of individuals grappling with mental health challenge
The goal of our suicide prevention program and activities is to reduce the factors that increase the risk of suicide and increase factors that promote resiliency. Being born with a disability; having a family that fails to support who you are as an LGBTQIA individual; being an immigrant; being socio-economically disadvantaged—these are among a myriad of challenges faced by the individuals. According to the CDC, suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It was responsible for nearly 46,000 deaths in 2020.
In a report by the National Alliance on Mental Illness 21% of U.S. adults experienced mental illness in 2020 (52.9 million people). This represents 1 in 5 adults. 5.6% of U.S. adults experienced serious mental illness in 2020 (14.2 million people). This represents 1 in 20 adults. 16.5% of U.S. youth aged 6-17 experienced a mental health disorder in 2016 (7.7 million people) 6.7% of U.S. adults experienced a co-occurring substance use disorder and mental illness in 2020 (17 million people
